A bIt too close. Splash Point. Seaford

There is a good story and a lesson attached to this and I like the position of the in the frame. The sky is a little bland and I wonder if a square crop would benefit this? Well done on retaining ll the detail in the chalk cliffs.

Sunset at Bluebell Hill

The actual sunset with the frame of trees and sky detail works well here but I think the foreground is a little distracting. The commemorative stone with its inscription takes our eye away from the subject. In my images I try to make any text relevant to the subject if possible. I enjoy the colouring here though.

On The Rocks

The rocks make an excellent foreground subject here and it is interesting how they lead us through the image until the point takes us to the post on the groynes. The depth of field is nicely controlled here. The post is an important element but it is a bit swamped by the sky detail so great as it is I would crop the sky out just above the post and make that a stop in the composition. Nicely seen.

To The Beach

The powerful leading lines in this image literally drag us through the image. Unfortunately the end of the walkway appears to be barred and we can't actually get to the beach. I would have been tempted to clone that out and add some of the rocks and that for me would have completed the story. I particularly enjoy the colours here with the warm tones of the wood against the cool tones.

Playing Hard To Get

SM

This is another image with a great story and I am sure we can all understand what is going on. The attitude of both birds is particularly good. The image appears to have been taken in quite harsh lighting and it is a shame that the rocks in the background are so bright and take our attention away from the birds. I cannot fault the composition here.

On the Lookout

SM

There is much to admire here. The bird has been very nicely caught in mid flight and the focussing is spot on. Depth of field doesn't extend to the wing tips but that is no concern because the eye is pinsharp. The colour of the bird has added to the difficulties but the exposure has ensured some nice detail in the plumage. The dark background also adds to it all.

The Spinnaker Tower

Monochrome images work best with strong shapes and the Spinnaker Tower is a great subject for the medium. Unfortunately here the lighting has not been kind and the tones are limited. There also appears to be some oversharpening revealed by the white line around the subject. It is a great subject and there is a wealth of options for great images from it but I would recommend a return in more favourable conditions.

Eyeball Clean

Ouch was my first reaction to this and I can honestly say I have never seen this caught in a photo before! The great lighting has really emphasised the skin detail. The usual problems of shooting in obvious captivity are here of course but they have been minimised to a certain extent so well done on capturing something different from the usual elephant image.

Young Mallard

SM

This is a different image and not what I expected when I read the titles. The compelling feature of this is the eye of course which is nicely detailed and most importantly, sharp. The colours in the background are muted but the flat lighting has brought out the details in the bird. The only very minor improvement I would make is to crop the brighter area at the top but that is something very small on this interesting image.

Five Yachts from above

It is interesting to see a drone image. The subject is something different and the vertical shot is a good idea. Unfortunately for me the boats are too far apart and there is too much empty space. Having said that there is some nice detail in the water surface. There is no doubt that there is a great deal of mileage in drone photography.

Rain on a Car Roof

One of the advantages of being a judge is seeing the great ideas that photographers have and this is a perfect example. It is an image full of action and movement firmly anchored of course by the antenna which is an important element here. The contrast is very high and there are some burnt out areas but overall this is very good.

I'm a Radio Star

3rd

I like an image with a story and this one ticks the boxes. The picture space is full of detail but it is not cluttered as every element has a part to play in the story. Text can be a distraction and our eyes are naturally drawn to it but again every word seen here is linked to the story. Nicely seen and nicely composed.

Lost In The Moment

2nd

There is much to admire here. I like the dynamic composition with the figure on the diagonal. The image displays a soft focus vignette effect which concentrates our gaze on the sharpest areas including the face. The icing on the cake is the high quality monochrome with it's excellent tones.

Enmeshed

There are some great textures here mostly introduced by the mesh. It is an anonimous figure but the pose is good. Contrast is a little high and the bright area in the backgroundis a little distracting but this is a different and eye catching image.

Jasmine

This is a high quality portrait with a dynamic diagonal pose which I don't often see but is pleasing to the eye. Focussing, exposure and lighting is to a very high standard. The lamp appeared to be a distraction at first but it does fill what would otherwise have been a dead space so is a clever addition.

I believe the secret to the success of this image is the use of monchrome which relies on light, shade and shapes which abound here. The quality of the image and the contrast range is very high. The shade of the chair compliments the model perfectly and even the tattoos work perfectly on that forearm. Very good.
