It's hard being a hound

The expression on this face tells the story. The lighting is good and Ilike the arrangement. Depth of field is a little too shallow and I would have preferred all the face and nose in focus although the all important eyes are sharp.

Hint of Red

The idea behind this good with a monochrome glass which incidentally has been very well lit to show the outline, and the splash of red. I feel I would have preferred the base of the glass as well to support the image but either way it is a great idea and well taken.

Sharp and Soft

This is a well taken study. I like the natural looking background whicjh is well diffused but still recogniseable. The plant subject has been well exposed with great sharpness. I particularly like the different coloured head. The light coloured strand at the top of the image is a little distracting.

Hever Castle

Hever Castle is a great subject and this is a very different view of it. The image shows well the landscape around the building but I do feel that the castle is closed off in the image. If there was a gap in the hedge or a gate, that was open, we could be invited in to see the building. Well done though in looking for a different viewpoint.

Think It Might Rain

This looks to be a great location. The mountains with their recession works well and the sky detail fits in perfectly with the title. The bottom is cropped a bit and I wondered if there was more to see including more of the trees. The colour balance is a tad warm as well and I would have cooled this a bit to give it more of an overcast feel. A nice landscape.

How Rude

An extremely powerful image particularly with the eye to eye contact. The detail and sheer quality of the image is very high. I'm not sure about the completely black vignette, I wonder if the surrounding detail could be subdued but leaving just a little for the viewer to enjoy. The tongue of course is the icing on the cake here.

Knife Angel

There is a strong message in this artwork and I like how it has been taken with the outstretched hands toward us with the questioning look on the face well rendered. The light vignette is a little distracting for me and I would have gone for the opposite darker vignette.

Help

What makes this image is the close crop and the mass of detail. The rendering of the hands in particular is excellent in the great lighting conditions. I would prefer the exposure to be constant over the frame and dispense with the light vignette. A very good abstract approach that tells the story of this artwork.

Chihuly at Kew, blue Persian detail

SM

This is a very good pattern picture. The photographer has homed in on a detail and has also arranged it very well. This Dale Chihuly coloured glass piece has been excellently lit.The dark portion in the top left is very important and it must be added how the colours work well together.

Fisherboy by the river

A very pleasing and well constructed image. The lead in via the wooden construction is fantastic and the overal exposure and detail is great. I am amazed how much depth of field has been captured by this phone at f1.7. I assume that means the sensor is very small but no matter this is a good image. The subject of the title is small in the image and I may consider a retitle but I do like this one.

Knife Angel

A clever artwork created from a reaction to another artwork. Not sure I would have understood it without the explanation but it is a thought provoking piece and the montage has been well assembled.

Holly and ivy

I am assuming the holly is the sculptured face. This appears to be a montage and again it has been well assembled if that is what it is. It could well be a straight shot. The face emerging from the holly is very effective and I enjoy the colour combination.

BW Camera

I like the idea behind the image with careful lighting exposing selected details of the subject. It works quite well but some areas are still too dark for me. For example I would have applied more light to the lens area. Still an interesting area of still life work and I certainly encourage the photographer to do more.

Full shoulder throw

This is a well timed action shot. Sharpness and detail in the subjects is high. It is a little unfortunate that the background detail is also sharp and a little intrusive. I would suggest experimenting with wider apertures to throw out of focus the background. Nevertheless, I am sure the participants will be interested in your images.

Knife Angel Wings

1st

The Knife Angel artwork has appeared a few times in this competition and it is interesting viewing the different interpretations. This on is particularly effective. The arrangement and lighting of the knives is very good but the careful placement of the text is excellent. Very good indeed.

Two Boats

This is a competent study of these two boats. Detail, sharpness and exposure are spot on. The texture of the wood is rendered well and this colour contrasts well with the blue tones of the sea and sky. Well done on getting the horizon level which can be so easily missed in images like this. I wondered if the image may benefit from another element such as a seagull or another vessel but as presented it is a nice image.

A Ladder to the Clouds

A carefully composed study of this impressive ladder where everything is nicely arranged within the image space. Conditions on the day were not ideal but I do like the sky detail the photogrpaher has managed to capture. I would be tempted to crop out all the text up to the base of the ladder and have an interesting triangular composition instead. Nicely taken with great depth of field.

Sunset in dunedin

I would not suggest looking through the lens at the sun but the sky detail of this image works well. It gives great testament to the equipment that there is no flare. The boat is a little lost in the image and I wondered if a shift of position may have allowed some rim lighting to it. Very good composition and I am impressed with what you achieved with the sun above the horizon like this.

Gorilla at busch gardens

There is real character caught in the face of this monkey and the fact he is holding something adds to it. Focussing is spot on for the subject which has been nicely separated from the background. I would suggest cropping out the highlights in the background and certainly darkening the very bright foreground grass area. There does appear to be colour balance issue as well but this can be easily sorted.

Cliff Face

What a great subject just crying out for this monochrome treatment. I would crop out the dark area at the top and work some more contrast and detail extraction into that wonderful rock texture.

Having a Rest

This is a nice macro shot. We often see these images in profile but this face on approach has worked well. Focussing is spot on for the face which has thrown out the tail completely which is to be expected. The surrounding vegetation gives a natural feel to the image. I would have cloned out the white spot on the left edge of the image but otherwise this is very good.

Pot Pourri Bathed in Natural Light

A very subtle and very simple still life. It would have been tempting to stop down for greater depth of field but a wider aperture has concentrated our eyes on the light shaded flower. The colour palette is also narrow but works very well.

23

Louise Hubbard

Dying Petals

I like the idea here and it shows that indoor photography is just as relevant and fun as other types. However, the lighting and manipulation to the tones is a little too harsh for my taste. Using the contrasting plant types makes for a good composition though.

The Dark Alley

3rd

There is a great timeless feel to this apart from the unfortunate plastic drainpipe which could make this location a brilliant place for period photography. I like the composition with its leading lines and the toning coupled with good control of the contrast is very good. The image does seem to be devoid of life but I like the sense of mystery it conveys.

Tug Svitzer Meridian Fire Hose Display

2nd

The backlighting coupled with the brooding sky has created this wonderful image. The photographer has captured masses of detail and presented it with great skill. My only minor point is that the boat is a little dark and I wonder if some careful lightening of this could have been beneficial. This is a very minor point though in this great image.

Artist at Work

SM

This is a nice arrangement with the artist positioned so we can see his image which is in fact two mobile phone photographers. The photographer has correctly for me included the whole of the artist but the ladder has been cropped leaving me wondering how much of it is out of shot. Once again nicely presented with excellent exposure and sharpness.

Ready For a Stag Night

Nicely controlled and great image detail especially considering we are looking at the side in shadow. The crop of the legs is a little awkward for me but I cannot see any other way of presenting this image and retaining those magnificent horns. Nicely done.

Plums

A competetent study of this fruit. Nice specimens nicely arranged, lit and with perfect depth of field.

Knife Angel

SM

This is another knife angel image but this one stands out one for being monochrome and two for the composition. The lighting is strong and directional. We have a few specular highlights but overal I enjoy this very much.
