chillin with my friends

SM

This is a nicely taken image. The detail and quality of the animals is excellent and I am very impressed with the monochrome treatment. I would have cropped the left of the image letting the head of the main animal to be off centre and looking inwards. Otherwise this is a fine image.

Line out

There is a very nice triangle composition to this and the timing is spot on for me. The image is cropped a bit tight at the base and the supporter figures are a little intrusive for me. There is another image here for the taking which is to crop in tightly to the players going for the ball.

Best Snaps

A Taste Of Honey

SM

A very straight forward record shot of this interesting drink but the image should not be underestimated as this has been extremely well taken. Sharpness and exposure are spot on but the real skill has been accentuating the edges of the glass bottle. The image lacks a story for me but technically its great.

Hedgehog Making an Appearance

This is a different type of wildlife shot. The rendering of the hedgehog is brilliant with spot on focus, detail and exposure. The front paw which appeaers to be like a small hand is very nice. The left hand side of the image has a bright area I would have cropped out and I really do not like the faded white border. However, as I said previously the hedgehog part is excellent.

Float down, Like autumn leaves

1st

This is an extremely well crafted and well executed image. From the colour of the dress to the reflection everything appears to be well planned before the shutter was pressed. The lighting is excellent and the brightest part of the image is entirely central drawing our eyes in to the model without the need for an artificial vignette. An excellent image.

memories of summer

Another fine portrait. Everything in the image reminds us of summer with the clothes through to the sunlight itself. I am a little concerned with the colour which does not feel 'summery' to me and the contrast especially in the darker areas of the tree looks a little low. This photographer knows how to create a portrait with a story.

Welsh Waterfall

Waterfalls can be approached photographically in many ways including as a close up detail or in the landscape such as here. Another decision is shutter speed to freeze the motion of the water or go for a more dreamy effect. We have gone for the longer shutter speed here which has worked quite well. There are a few highlights for which there could still be detail on the original file if it was shot in RAW. I would certainly have cropped out the sky. A nice landscape taken in soft lighting which has worked to its advantage.

Single Fungi under the Trees

A very nice use of shallow depth of field here. The background indicates this was taken in situ and not in a studio and I enjoy the colours. It would have been tempting to go for a portrait shot of this but I quite like the use of the slightly square landscape format.

Fungi Stuck In Wood

SM

Similar comments to the above but with the addition of some diagonals to add some dynamism. A minor minor point is I may have cropped a tad off the top but this does not affect my enjoyment of this.

Signs of Autumn

This is a well seen group of fungi. I like the fact they are all slightly different sizes and with subtle colour differences. I would not have used the soft border though which takes away from  a nice image.

Autumn gold

An image that certainly screams autumn. The golden hues work well against the clear blue of the sky. The tree branches are also over to the left which adds a sense of composition to the image. I was wondering whether it needed another element but on reflection I believe it works well as it is.

Naval Services Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum

Modern memorials such as this often have abstract qualities compared to traditional statues etc and I think it is a good idea to concentrate on abstract views. This is very much a straight image which nevertheless is a good rendition of the memorial. I would suggest next time a tighter crop or maybe take a diagonal image to further accentuate its intrinsic abstractness.

sealed with a kiss

A very nicely timed image and a title with a story. The focussing and exposure for the mammals is spot on although exposing for their dark tones has raised the background unavoidably high but I find the foreground interest conteracts that. In an ideal world the third seal would not be there but the image is still very good.

Not a care in the world, New England Style

To me this image is all about colour. From the foliage to the bicycle colour pervades through this picture. I imagine it is a feature of New England but the black post box looks incongruous and I may have cloned it out for a competition picture. There is also the unfortunate tree which appears to be supported by the handlebars. Small details which take away from an image with such an apt title.

End of the Estuary, Kennesbunkport, New England

First of all I must say how impressive the quality of this phone image is. It is full of detail and with slightly contrasty but still good tones. Initially I was a little concerned with the foreground wooden bannister but on further viewing it does match the shape of the background and draws the viewer into the image. Although full of detail the image strangely feels empty and I think it may be crying out for the addition of a figure somewhere.

Autumn Red

I enjoy the careful control of depth of field here which immediately concentrates our eyes on the plant in focus but with enough depth to render the out of focus plants as also identifiable. The sample is not prisitine as something has taken a munch out of it but it adds to the realism as does the colourful background.

Evening Blue of St. Mary's Island

For me evening photography works better when there is still light in the sky to provide wonderful deep blue hues just as we have here. Unfortunately there is no light on either the buildings or the boats which is a real shame. The dark areas are a little too overpowering and featureless. Even so the timing of the shot was perfect so look for better lit subjects. The golden glow of artificial lighting against deep blue skies is often a winning combination for great night shots.

The Street, Whitstable

The Street is an interesting coastal feature and I can't remember seeing this view looking back towards the coast before. The water filled shingle area is a nice touch and adds some nice contrast and interest to the shingle. The image has a huge range of tones but with the overcast conditions it feels a bit too sombre and I'm wondering whether a slight boost to the contrast might have lifted the image. Well done though in finding a different view of a well known subject.

Waiting for Christmas

Robins are popular subjects and why not as they often give memorable images with a real feel good factor. In my experience they often seem to pose for you as well! This image is nicely balanced but the out of focus leaves on the left do have distracting highlights and I would be tempted to crop this into a square composition. It is certainly a Christmassy image and would look good on a card I think.

penalty kick

This is a wonderfully timed image and the shutter speed selected has frozen the player but has allowed movement to be shown. Unfortunately for this image to really work it needs to be isolated from the background which is very intrusive. I am sure there are various techniques in post processing that could help towards this but I cannot fault the skill the photographer has in capturing the action shown here.

Lower Halstow Pier

This is a finely constructed landscape. The lead in is fantastic which takes us into a tranquil scene. The horizon is slightly to the left and I think lowering the yellow would strengthen the colours but other than that this is a very enjoyable image and is a view of North Kent I have not seen before.

Broom Hill Park

Another fine and tranquil landscape scene. The tree has been used to great effect to both frame and provide foreground detail to the image. The lower contrast without strong blacks and the warm colours have given the image a soft, autumnal feel.

STOP the Battle...I've got a Call

3rd

I am intrigued as to why the face of this person is silver but I will assume it is part of the character being played. When photographing re-enactment type images I try to avoid any sort of modernity in the image but here this photographer has embraced it which also serves to enhance the story of the image. General quality of the image is very high and I do like how there is absolutely no intrusion in the background. Very good.

Prize Winner

2nd

These days in addition to good technical aspects to an image I am finding that if a given image tells a story I enjoy it more and here is a great example. Everything in this image supports the title. Also there is no interaction with the photographer by the young people which shows this is a great street shot. The figures are a little tight but not cropped in any way so I am quite happy there. In a way I think this is a reportage type image which reminds me of street shots taken of inner city children in the 1940's/50's etc. This is one to keep for future generations to see I feel.

Autumn Canopy

Over the years I have seen many images like this of tree canopies but I think this is the first showing autumn colours. The great splash of orange works very well. These images often lack a 'zing' point for the eye to finally rest on but there is much to enjoy here from the lead ins via the tree trunks to the detail in that canopy.

Two Red Houses

Landscapes do not always need to be grand vistas, sometimes isolated details such as this can work just as well. The houses and the trees work well in the foreground and the forest basckground also works well. In post processing I may of accentuated the colours of the forest trees a bit more and darkened the foreground to concentrate our eyes on the houses. Well seen and well taken.
