Stillness in Autumnal Gold

I like the abstract feel to this. The colours certainly scream autumn. The streams of light add an extra dimension. There is no real composition or zing point here but it is a pleasant and different image.

After the Harvest

Again this is a very different image. The composition nicely takes us through the image and the plane of focus is on the only well lit apple which works well. It is a pity that the leaf behind it is so over bright as without it the single lit apple would be more prominent.

It's a Sunny Day on Bognor Beach

It is good to see some outdoor portraiture and I like the pose here and the warm skin tones. The face is nicely lit too which contrasts well with the dark clothing. The clothing is very dark though and I wondered if there were some tones in there that could be extracted to lift it slightly? People often like to see eye to eye contact with the viewer in a portrait but I quite like the looking away here.

What is On Your Mind?

In many ways this is the polar opposite to the other beach portrait. We have the straight, eyes level stare at the viewer here and the question in the title comes to mind. The use of monochrome adds another dimension but I think I might have lifted it slightly with a tad more contrast to make the blacks stronger. I cannot fault the the focussing though and the detail in the face and those eyes is great.

St James Church Cooling

The lighting here is great which has emphasised the detail in the stonework well. The angle of view is good and the empty sky areas are nice filled by the branches. The crop at the top is a bit tight and the weather vane does unfortunately enhance this with its brightness. I think I would darkened that down and/or maybe stepped back further, (if possible), at the time of exposure. A fine record come pictorial treatment of this subject.

Church Stained Glass

1st

This is pretty much a masterclass in taking a stained glass window. The subject is in wonderful condition and doesn't have the often found security mesh on the outside which lets down many such images. The vertical edges are perfectly parallel too. Finally, the image was taken in great lighting which has created a nicely balanced exposure over the whole window without burnt out areas or dark black areas. Very nice.

A Dash of Red

There is more than a dash of red here! The colour pallette is very small but it all works very well with the greens contrasting well with the red. The red might be a tad oversaturated but it does make for a very colourful image.

Autumn Reflections at N.T Scotney Castle

Scotney Castle in the autumn is a great place to be photographically. The colours here all work together well with the red tree the obvious subject. I think I would have cropped out the bright area at the bottom of the image and boosted the colours and contrast slightly. I am a little concerned that the image is not level and drops to the right. Well done on finding a Scotney view without the castle!

Spoonful

SM

I imagine there was much experimentation and attempts at this but this makes it all worth while. The high shutter speed has given the splash a feel of glass or ice but it has captured these great shapes. The overal quality is great as well. The solitary drop at the top does show movement and after some thought I decided the image is stronger with it cropped out but that is just my thought. Otherwise this is an impressive image and well done.

Splash

Many of my comments on the 'Spoonful' image apply here also. I imagine this was the result of many attempts. The solitary drop above the splash is perfectly placed but I think I may have enhanced it look brighter. The exposure on the highlights is perfectly balanced though. Well done.

This is a beautiful monochrome portrait. The expression and the connection with the viewer is full on. What really makes this image is the quality of the monochrome. There is detail throughout the contrast range from the bright areas through to the black hair. In addition the contrast is perfectly judged to make the blacks strong but not blocked up. The bright skin tones are also full of detail too. Excellent.

The Orford Line

2nd

What a wonderful and tranquil image which appears simple but the photographer has carefully arranged this composition. Tranquil it might be but the diagonal of the boats adds a dynamic to the composition. Also, none of the boats overlaps another. The soft lighting also adds to the quietness here. I'm sure this could even work well as a sunset too. Very nice indeed.
