The Old Tree by the River

This is a monochrome image with some nice rich tones. The lighting is flat but this has ensured that a full range of those tones has been retained. Monochrome images work well with strong shapes and the old tree is a good subject here. Unfortunately it is a little lost in the background but otherwise this is a nicely produced black andfn white image.

Still

Still is a good title as there is simply hardly any movement here. The composition is well thought out and it is nice to see the horizon in the top third and not straight across the centre cutting the image in half. There is some nice detail in the water and I'm wondering if this could hvae been carefully enhanced more. I do like how the rocks and the shingle create a nice triangle.

champagne spray

The timing is good here although it is a shame that the face is virtually iobscurred by the spray. In a perfect world for me the spray would have framed the face. Text and words can be a problem in an image but here they are part of the story so I am happy with that. the lighting is good and there is some nice sharp detail.

I won't try to interpret what this image means but it is certainly effective and the merging of the faces is extremely well done on close examination. The monochrome with the colour popped lips also works well. My only really minior concern are the eyes on the side faces where we can only see the whites which is a strange effect. If the pupils were turned more to the front maybe the image would look different. Other than that this is a very good photo.

A Path Through the Bluebells. Walderslade Woods

There is a good use of colouir here and the composition certainly draws us in and through the image. The bluebells are a small part of the image space but my real concern is the lack of a zing point. I think sometyhing like a dog in the foreground on the path could be beneficial as the image appears very empty. I do enjoy the detail and colour rendering created by the good exposure.

Blue Tits Changing Places

SM

They say always carry a camera and be in the right place at the right time and this is a good wexample of why. The timing is very good and I like the story here. There are a couple of minor points such as the front bird is a little soft and I would certainly crop off the left side to concentrate solely on the bird box but as I said I enjoy the story this image tells.

This is a competent portrait with nice lighting and a good use of colour. Sharpness and detail is good and the quality of the image is high. I wonder if some eye contact would be an advantage? A  nice summery image.

Ready for Take Off

1st

Another image in this selection that stands out because of the excellent timing. The positioning of the wings gives the impression to me of a conductor beginn ing to conduct an orchestra. Ther composition is extremely well balanced and the sharpness and detail are great. The only minor point is the uninviting colour of the murky water but that is no fault of the photographer who has captured a fine image.

On our way

SM

This is another superbly timed image and the focussing and detail retained in the birds is very good. Two subjects does mean our eyes flit between them both but they equally attract our attention anyway. The out of focus background has enough detail to show the habitat of these birds and that works well.

Rain Approaching

3rd

This is a nively crafted landscape image which has received some masterful control especially in the cloud detail. The subtle tones could easily have been lost but here they have been retained and we even have the hint of a rainbow. I like the composition with the diagonal components leading us through the image. It is a slight shame that the nearest boat as been cropped, I wonder if having the stern just in the image may have worked better. The warm tones caught in the sunlight are a nice foil to what is approaching. nice.
