southend from grain

This appears to have been taken with a high magnification lens and I like the detail captured. I assume this was tripod mounted but if it was handheld I am impressed by the steady hand at such a low ISO. There is a blue cast and the white buildings are lacking in highlight detail but this detail could still be in the original RAW final and the image could also be warmed up. A good effort.

walk along the beach

SM

This is an attractive image of Hastings. The lighting is good and I like the composition with the lead in sweep from the left. The horizon is a little central but the sky detail helps to balance this. I would have taken the image a little earlier and had the figures closer to the photographer but otherwise this is a nice quality picture taken on a great day.

Wembley Arch

I like the interplay here with the manmade structures appearing to grow out of the vegetation. The vegetation is soft which concentrates our gaze on the buildings. The Wembley Arch is certainly visible but is a small component within the image space so I would have chosen a different title. At first glance the lighting conditions seem less than ideal but they have enhanced the details of the buildings.

Kew Waterfall

There is a great deal to enjoy here with a nice composition of the waterfall with nice detail. The lighting is very flat but this has produced a nice range  of tones. The background building structures are a distraction and I would certainly have cropped these out. The shutter speed chosen works well with the water movement.

Falesia Beach

2nd

This is a high quality seascape. The attraction is the combination of the movement of the water coupled with the contrast of the solid rocks. The horizon is very central but to drop it would lose the wonderful tones in the sky. I especially enjoy the effects created by the breaking waves. Very nice.

Glen Coe Highway

SM

This is a different view of Glen Co compared to most photographs we see of the area. The road works well especially with the two arrows. This aspect of the composition is good but I'm wondering if the mountain on the left is cropped too much. I would certainly try this in a monochrome version. Nice to see something different of a popular subject.

Pink Sky looking towards the Isle Skye

SM

Skye is another great location and once again we have a different approach to a popular subject. The colours are fantastic. I realise it was out of the control of the photographer but some separation between the boats would have been advantageous. In addition I would look at a cropped version of this concentrating on the boats with the mountains in the background. Again something different and interesting.

A View Down the Fleet

3rd

A simple image that really conveys the subject. The area looks to be flat, empty and characterised by large open skies and all this is shown here. It  would be tempting to say it needs a zing point to fix the eye but I don't think that is the case here. The sky detail is great as is the inclusion of the piece of land to the bottom left of the image.

The Tide is Out

This image is everything the title says. The subject detail and composition is good and the image is well taken although I would have tilted the camera down to capture the complete rock and lessen the amount of sky.

Hilltop Celtic Cross overlooking the remote Scottish Highlands

This celtic cross gives a real sense of place and is a powerful symbol in these areas. The composition here is very good with the cross in the foreground leading us into the landscape beyond. The lighting is very flat which has really muted the colours but has given a wealth of tones throughout the exposure range. With all this detai to hand this is another image that I would have tried in monochrome. I'm sure there is great fun to be had teasing out the tones and contrast here in black and white.

Remote house in the Scottish Highlands

1st

I enjoy this image very much. The house which is the subject of the title is very centrally placed in the picture width, is also small in the image and looks a little incongruous amongst the majesty surrounding it but for me this picture works. I can see leading lines everywhere which all head to this house and I enjoy the sheer balance of the composition. The three trees around the house stand out well against the mountains. Very nice.
