Malta - red and blue

3rd

This is a well seen composition and the colour combination works extremely well. Ther various elements from the worn steps lead us through the image. I think I would have made the slight correction to the verticals and croped out the white areas intruding into the picture edges otherwise this is great. The colours are a tad saturated but they are effective, especially the red of the post box.

Dovercourt Lighthouse

Long exposure images of water can often be unpredictable but here we have the excellent light tones which have formed a great shape in contrast to the solid groynes and lighthouse. The monochrome conversion has good contrast and range of tones. The composition has a classic lead in from front left to top right which works as well as ever.

Mars after Dark Rochester Cathedral

SM

I was lucky to see this art installation recently at the cathedral and this image nicely conveys it. This image has been carefully constructed and I am impressed how evenly the various components are arranged and all the verticals are vertical. I think I might have toned down the red light saturation a tad but otherwise this is very good.

Stroll Along the Front

I like the colours here and the composition gives us a nice lead in lines. I find the right half is a little superfluous although the triangle of water in the sand is a nice addition. The subject of the title is a bit swamped in the image and I think I would have taken this with the two walkers further forward in the image space. The letterbox crop is nice and works well here.

Weeping Willow Reflections

The secret to a perfect reflection in water of course is a completely still surface and that is what we have here. The detail is very good. I wonder if it would have still looked this good if the photographer took a side step to the left? This would have lost the intrusive tree branches on the righ had side of the image space. I would also have taken the opportunity to crop in closer to the tree and reflection to further enhance the excellent reflection.

Common Teasel by the Medway

The photographer here has used a wide aperture to separate the teasels from the background which for me is the correct thing to do. This has given us some indistinct white highlights but that is unavoidable. I think there are too many teasels for me and I would have concentrated on the three in the middle of the image which form a nice shape and maybe gone for a portrait arrangement. Spot on focussing and colour and taken in nice lighting.

Me and My Shadow

I have taken images like this and they can be great fun. You are always guaranteed a great lead in on the left from your own shadow. Having a second shadow and the groyne gives us the magic three number here. It is unfortunate that the shadow detail is completely blocked up on the groyne and I would revisit the original file to see if some more detail can be extracted. The other shadows have a nice contrast and detail.

Not Much Left (Flushing Pier Queenborough

2nd

This could be viewed as a record shot and/or a pictorial shot. It contains a great deal of information regarding the pier and it is certainly one I would file with a date as it is certainly historic. On a pictorial level the letterbox crop is great and the image space only contains what we need to see. The horizon is nice and level and I particularly like how the viewpoint has been carefully chosen to allow us to the see the background detail too.

Afternoon Stroll

1st

There is much to enjoy here. The technical aspects are great with the focussing and use of a large aperture to concentrate our gaze on the foreground walkers. The composition allows for a great lead lead in which takes us beyond the foreground walkers to the ther walkers coming in the opposite direction. I wondered if the white building in the background might dominate too much but it has been subdued nicely and not burnt out. The use of monochrome has eliminated any distracting colours. The icing on the cake though is the timing especially the leg positions of the walkers. Excellent.
