Hern Bay Pier

1st

This is an extremely well constructed composition. Everything including the clouds and even their reflection leads us to the fairground ride on the pier. Coupled with that the high quality of the image itself. Very good indeed.

Twin Towers at Dockside

These flats are a good monochrome subject as their strong shape and patterning lend themselves to this. The boat bottom left is a nice addition. The monochrome is a tad on the contrasty side and I think I would also crop the bottom slightly but otherwise this is a good record of these buildings.

Sun setting over the Medway

SM

What makes this image is the dramatic sky  emphasised by the use of a wide angle lens. I glad to see the sun has some colour and was not allowed to burn out entirely. To further strengthen the composition I would crop out most of the river which would make the castle more prominent in the image space.

Looking into the sunset

Compositionally this is a good image. The figure is well spaced and having them looking away drags us into the image. The sunset detail is also very good. Unfortunately the image is very underexposed. I would certainly return to the RAW file to see if the final image can be lightened.

Sunset over Motney Hill

SM

There are some beautiful colours in this sunset image and the exposure is nicely balanced. At first glnace the image looked a little empty but then I saw the nicely placed, and nicely lit waterway on the bottom left which adds greatly to this.

Sunset over the Moorings

judging by the effect in the sky this bears the hallmarks of a stitched panorama which if it is it has been accomplished very well considering the moving water in the image. The composition has been nicely arranged and well thought out for a panoramic picture. After much consideration I think I would have cropped out the harbour wall on the left although it does act as a stop on that side.

Danger Soft Mud

3rd

There is much to enjoy here. The use of a long exposure has created nice movement in the water and the arrangement of the pier supports is greatly enhanced by the colours and especially the warm glow on the foremost leg. The sign is a nice finishing touch  and well placed.

River Wear Durham

This is a night shot which has been taken at the optimum time allowing colour to be captured in the sky. The lit buildings are good although it is a shame that the bright light on the bridge is not even across the span but that was obviously out of control of the photographer of course. This image is a good example of how a scene changes completely at different times of the day.

Fun on the River

There is a great deal to look at in this scene. Wherever you rest your eyes there is something to see. Although the frame is nicely filled it does seem a tad busy though. Perhaps concentrating on one section could be beneficial. Full marks for capturing such  a sharp and detailed image.

3 Paddle Boarders

Threeis often quoted as the magic number and it does certainly seem to work. This has been well captured with good timing. It certainly shows the paddleboarders in their landscape, (seascape?). There has been some aggressive sharpening revealed by the bright halo around the figures which is a shame. I think I would also crop this down to a letterbox as well. I do enjoy an image with a story and this fits that bill.

Form And Function

SM

Monochrome images work well with strong shapes and lines and this shows that well. The contrast has been nicely handled too. I think my only comment would be to perhaps crop a piece off the right hand side to reduce the bare background area. Well done for looking for images where others would have walked by.

Dockside Abstract

I applaud the photographer for looking for different viewpoints  but I think this one needs something else as it is a little too abstract for me. I think as taken I might have also presented this in monochrome. The bright highlight in the background is a distraction and pulls my eyes away. As I said well done for looking for something different.

Hern Bay

2nd

At first glance this image looks empty but careful viewing reveals a clever composition where all the leading lines take us to the end of the pier remains. The high key presentation works well although there are subtle details in the brighter areas . My only concern is the large expanse in the left foreground but otherwise this a carefully considered shot of a well photographed area.

Between the Rocks. Bigbury on Sea

What a fantastic location and well done for finding a framed viewpoint looking out to sea. The depth of field is nicely controlled. I notice there seems to be a figure in the sea and it is a shame this isn't larger as it would have been a great zing point. Lighting wasn't on your side for drama but the overcast conditions have produced a wealth of detail in the rocks.
