Home before the storm

SM

This image is all about light, from the sunshine highlights which are in total contrast to that brooding sky. The figure is a highly important addition and completes the story. The photographer also ensured they were perfectly placed in the light. The all dark clothing means the figure does get a little lost in the cut  between the light and dark but overal this is a great image.

Funchal Bay

Wow, this is a superb seascape and there is very little I can comment on it. Technically it is spot-on from the depth of field through to the well judged exposure. The rock out in the sea is a pure silhouette and this is where our eye rests after enjoying everything else here. The little warm coloured cloud is even perfectly placed. Excellent.

Zebras of the Western Cape

I like how the photographer has cropped this down to  a letterbox which works well. I also like how the outer animals are both looking inwards. I think I would have cropped off a tad more on the bottom and boosted the contrast a little more to emphasise the black and white stripes. Nicely timed and well taken.

Open Wide

I think when we think of these animals this is what appears in our minds. It is a well timed shot. It is a shame that the crop is a little tight especially at the top and I think I might have had a go at improving the sharpness on the animal itself as it is a little soft. Otherwise a nicely taken picture.

There is a great deal to enjoy here. The composition itself is very strong with the sweeping curve in the foreground dragging us through the image. The lighting is great and the colours work great together. As a minor point I wonder if a slight shift to the right would have improved the crop on the right which is a little tight to the railing. This is a minor point on a great image.

Bathing Egyptian Goose

I enjoy the sense of movement here which is provided by the flapping wings and the water droplets suspended in the air. All this is in contrast to the still body of the goose and the all important eye which is pin sharp. Although it is often beneficial to have space in fromnt of a moving object I think I would have cropped some of the right hand side to balance the image a bit more. Still very good though.

Night Vision

This is something very different and I'm not too sure what to say about it. As an exercise in night photography the exposure is good with some nice details and the lit up tree is nicely rendered. As always with night photography I would recommend taking something like this a little earlier when there is still colour in the sky. You are then often rewarded with wonderful deep blue hues.

Heads

I don't quite understand this image but it is certainly an interesting exercise in photographic technique.

Piece by Piece

A tabletop image with  a human element! I like the story here and the photographer has carefully arranged the composition and the lighting to ensure we go straight to the piece in the hand. I especially like the angle of view.

Working by Candle Light

2nd

I like this image very much. It appears to me that the photographer has gone to great lengths to create this. The composition is very good and I am impressed that the book has been carefully chosen to invoke a 'period feel'. There is also the thought of course, that the warm colours that candlelight naturally creates in a daylight balanced exposure directly relates to the candles being a heat source themselves. Very clever.
