Hempstead Road

A great composition with lead in lines giving a nice 3D feel to it. The infra red treatment has given false colours but they are a nice combination. I feel the image needs something in the road to complete the story but as I said this is a well constructed image.

Beach Huts on Herne Bay Pier

Using frames within frames often works well as shown here. It is interesting how the image is full of straight lines. Monochrome works best for me with images with strong shapes whereas this has a great deal going  and is consequently very busy. I think this would work best in colour and I would try with muted pastel shades.

The Pavilion at Herne Bay

This monochrome image works much better as it is a clearly defined shape. The bright conditions and wonderful sky all work together very well. The image is close to being oversharpened but I do like the composition with great recession into the distant headland.

Cygnets

This is a nicely caught moment. I like the attitude of the two birds. The contrast does look a tad harsh on the soft bird feathers as if it is oversharpened or is a high ISO setting. If possible I would soften this down a little and crop the top slightly to lessen the soft background. Well seen and well taken.

That's Mine (Peregrine falcon catching lure)

2nd

This is all about timing which is absolutely spot on. Conditions are great as are the technical aspects including focussing and shutter speed. The bird is brilliantly placed above the treeline area. For me the most important addition is the hand which although small in the image space provides an anchor to the line. Remove that hand and the image weakens considerably. Well done.

Chainsaw wood carving and tree sculpture demonstration

The wood carver with her extremely dangerous looking equipment is excellently rendered here. The focussing and depth of field has isolated the subject beautifully although the background is unfortunately a bit fussy. Everything else is nicely observed and the shutter was tripped at the optimum moment.

The Needles ( in a haystack )

I like the idea here with having the subject very small in the image area. The sky has great detail but it does have a huge bright area which takes our eye away from the subject. A darker sky with cloudlines that point towards the Needles would work better I feel but well done on trying something different.

Visiting St Catherine 's Oratory

SM

The addition of the figure adds to the story here and coupled with the great clear conditions we have a great view of the surrounding landscape. I think I might have straightened the tower and dealt with the convergence but this is a small point in this great IOW image.

Scavenger

The bird part of this image is very good. The timing and attitude especially with just the beak exposed is great. Unfortunately the background is distracting and obtrusive. Remove or subdue that and this would be a great image.

Princess Docks Liverpool

The dockland area of Liverpool is great and those still waters can give great reflections as we see here. The danger with reflection images is that they can easily be cut in two and I think that has happened here. I think I would crop the top down to just above the buildings which would accentuate the reflection and give a more balanced and stronger composition. Brighten the image after that and it would be a very good picture.

Autumn is here

1st

Everything about this shouts 'Autumn', especially the colours of course. The square format has been expertly used and shows how powerful this seldom used format can be. The composition is excellent with a lead in taking us all the way through. Initially I thought the image was empty, but no, in the far distance is a solitary figure which acts as a full stop. Brilliant.

London Fog

3rd

The use of monochrome is the perfect choice here to accentuate the fog. The convergence gives the buildings a feeling of height which indicates how low the fog is.Clever. The contrast has also been brilliantly handled as prologed viewing slowly reveals other buildings within the foggy areas. Very nice indeed.

landing approach

This is a good angle of view and I like how the aircraft is angled slightly. The image is a tad grainy and the aircraft itself is a little soft which indicates that this could be a sectional enlargement. What has been nicely handled are the warm tones in the sky area caused by the engines which could have been lost. Well done.

wing walking

SM

Excellent sharpness throughout and with a great shutter speed selection which gives a nice blur to the propellor. The 3/4 angle of view is great too. The only downside which was out of the control of the photographer is the white featureless sky. Regardless of that the photographer has certainly grasped the technique of capturing propellor driven aircraft which is not as easy as you may think. Well done.

Spinnaker Tower Portsmouth.

SM

This is a fine view of the Spinnaker Tower captured on a very bright day but with the sun angled to give a raking light over the tower giving it form. Being a white subject there are burnt out areas but not enough to lessen the impact of the image. The wispy clouds and deep blue sky all add to a nice image.

A View over Achladies, Skiathos

A bright, colourful and contrasty image which is nicely framed especially in the bottom half by the subtle changes in the green hues. Having never been to this location I assume Achladies is the settlement and not the islands? Out of interest there are spots in the image which could be sensor dust/oil spots. The sharpness is well handled giving us a wealth of detail especiaaly in the buildings.

Sunset over Hemsby

Interesting to see a sunset over Hemsby which to my knowledge is in Norfolk on the east coast. The use of the trees as silhouettes works well. To me the colours are a little muted and the image feels underexposed. Some careful brightening and colour control could be beneficial. Having said that I like the rays of light which have been nicely retained in the sky area.

Onwards and upwards

I like how the photographer here has cropped in close to concentrate on the excellent shapes and lines created by the steel stairs. What the image needs to complete it is a figure carefully positioned somewhere, perhaps a third of the way up or down to add a finishing touch to it. I like the use of monochrome here.
