HMC Hunter saving more lives

A very topical image with a story. The angle of view is good and the all important detail is nice and clear. The vegetation in the foreground is obscuring part of the image which is unfortunate but I do like the lighting which works well.

Wakehurst Mansion

SM

This is an image which I think deserves to be enlarged and seen big. The lighting and especially the composition are very good. There is a difficult choice between presenting it as shown with the trees complete but with a large clear sky or to crop the trees out and show this as a long rectangle. I am in two minds myself as it is a fine image.

Gone Fishing

2nd

This is something very different and quite original. There is fantastic detail in the feathers and this alone could have been enough to convey the story. However, the photographer has gone one step further and managed to retain detail in the underwater areas as well. Excellent exposure control and a strong diagonal composition. Well done.

Landing

The timing here is spot on, the pose of the bird is caught mid flow very well. Exposure is good too. I think I would have cloned out the branch in the background. The body and head appear to have had extra sharpening as there is a tell tale white halo. I do like the sense of movement caught in this instant.

Sky Deja-vu

This double exposure has created a very different image. The photographer is to be congratulated on their panning technique. Having two points of interest with a distance in between is a little distracting as our gaze constantly switches between the two images. The cars also appear to be different sizes but having said that the technique is good and I'm sure it can be used in other situations.

Taking Flight

SM

The bird certainly fills the frame and the arrangement of the wings is brilliant. The point of focus does appear to be on the legs but I do like the attitude of the head. The tips of the wings are cropped by the edges of the images but this is an instant attention grabbing composition.

Edith May

1st

This is a very carefully observed composition and a great use of the blue and gold colour combination. Including the gold arrow shaped motif next to the Edith May legend leads us into and around the image. Every element plays a part. The image could indeed be timeless save for the bright red gas cylinder in the middle! An excellent entry.

About Turn RNLI 13-38

3rd

The complete wake in the water explains the title perfectly. I enjoy the setting and the image has been taken in great conditions. A very minor point is that I may have cropped the top a tad more but not too much as the masts are important. Very good indeed.

Rochester Riverside.

A good exercise in exposure control here. The image has been nicely timed and exposure nicely controlled to give light in the sky. Without the title I would never have guessed that this was Rochester. I would have cloned out the car but otherwise the composition is good. There is a nice lead in with the edge lighting and the trees end to give space for the strong shaped dark building. Nicely observed.

Rochester Cathedral

I have seen this frame used before but here the photographer has gone further and used it in the evening. The shutter was tripped at just the right time to retain that lovely deep blue sky colour. The artificial lighting has created the additional strong colours. Obviously, I don't know where the photographer stood but I wonder if they could have raised the camera more so that the cathedral fills the frame more and is not so severely cropped at the bottom. Well done though for taking a nightime picture before the sky turns black.

A View of the Shard

A very good use of the bridge structure as a frame nicely encapsulates this view. The weather conditions were not great but this lower contrast lighting has created great detail throughout the exposure range. The Thames pleasure boat is an important extra that further sets the scene.

Chalk Cliff Edge. Seaford Head

SM

The warm evening colours contrast well with the cool shadow colours here. The composition is good and it is great how the cliff 'headland' is picked out in the evening light. I wonder if something in the sea could have acted as a focal point but as presented it shows an excellent eye for an image and this is another one that I think would look good on the wall.
