Out fishing

SM

This is a nicely timed image. The composition is good with the bird slightly off centre. The flat lighting has created a good tonal range and a great deal of the white plumage has been retained. The great thing of course is what appears to be a fish in the beak area. A nice image.

Aylesford Bridge

There is some fine detail here. The lighting has again created a good range of tones and sharpness is very good. There does appear to be a yellow colour cast which I may try to reduce. It is certainly interesting to see a different view of this bridge instead of the classic scene with the church in the background.

Meercat

SM

Meerkats are renouned as posers and this is a great example. Sharpness, detail and lighting are very good. I am assuming this was not taken in the wild and if this is the case I am impressed how evidence of captivity has been avoided. Not sure what the black feature in the background is but otherwise this is a fine image.

Busy Bee

This is an impressive close up of this bee in action. The composition is very good and in particular the movement of the wings is well captured. There is a strange quality and sharpness to this which may suggest a sectional enlargement, I would not enlarge it any more than this. A very striking picture.

Kent River search

SM

This is the first time that I can remember seeing an image of this important group of people. The great joy with this is the colour combination which is very effective. The main subject matter is central in the image space and I would suggest having it off centre to the left as this would give the boat space to move into. There is evidence of a reflection which could be an idea for another image. Well done on capturing something different.

looking up river

Creating an image with a story is always a good idea and there certainly appears to be a story here. Including the emergency vehicles is great but the lens has created a strange effect where the compressed perspective makes the figures look very small compared to the fire engine for example. Concentrating the focus point on the police officers is correct for me and the nice lighting has created a good news type image.

The quality of this portrait is superb. There is fine detail throughout the image. Having just head and shoulders with direct eye contact with those hazel eyes is quite compelling. The uneven lighting with one half in shadow also works very well indeed. A quality image.

Aylesford Bridge

1st

Aylesford Bridge is a much photographed subject but is nearly always shown from a different angle to this. Again the quality of this is superb with excellent detail throughout with spot on exposure. What lifts this above other shots is the timing and the lighting which has ensured such a brilliant image. If it wasn't for the TV aerials this would also be absolutely timeless.Well done.

Two Dogs Go Paddling

This is a charming picture clearly showing the dogs enjoying the water. The area surrounding the dogs shows where they were and completes the story. For me I would have adjusted the contrast and colours for a richer range of tones. A closer crop would have strengthened the image as well for me. A nice fun image of these pets.

The Fab Four

I have seen thi statue on Liverpool waterfront and I rate it as one of the best statues I have ever seen. Each figure also has a secret feature that relates to that person. The monochrome treatment works well at bringing out the tones in the dark surface although I feel that the contrast is a little harsh. It is clear that there is a wealth of tones in the well taken image file so I think it is well worth revisiting and reducing the contrast a tad.

Westland Wasp HAS.1

This is a nice record type shot of this helicopter which clearly shows it well. The three quarter view works well and the exposure has also captured details in the shadow areas. I think I would have chosen a slower shutter speed to add more blur to the rotor blades but even so it is good that the chosen speed here has not frozen them entirely.

There has been some excellent panning going on here to create this great illusion of high speed. The background is blurred nicely but we still have very sharp detail of the aircraft. Completely out of the control of the photographer but it is unfortunate that the sky area has crept in. A complete background of the blurred vegetation would have greatly enhanced this. I cannot fault the skill of the photographer who has clearly mastered panning.
