There isa nice form to this composition. There is a wealth of detail to look at in all parts of the image but ultimately everything leads us down the path to the gate. The gate is closed which creates a mental block and I think I would have opened this gate, (if possible) of course, which would lead us on into the background. Alternatively a figure standing there may have been interesting. Either way this is a good image and as I said at the beginning it is a good composition.

Riverside Sunset

Sunsets are usually a riot of colour but this one is a little unique in having the warm colours as just a small part of the image space. Looking towards the sun means that everything in the shadow side, the side facing us, will be dark but the photographer here has done well to retain the detail in this area. The detail is quite interesting too.

Queendown Warren

This looks like a good landscape location. The image is wide and shows a great deal of the area. The tree on the left is a good addition as it does lessen the impact of the dead central horizon which is not always ideal. The green colour cast is also a bit unattractive and I think I would have made this more neutral or gone for a slight blue tone to add to the cold subject. The snow and/or frost on the trees looks fantastic and I hope the photographer took some detail shots of these.

Star Lane

This is a total contrast to the preceding image. This is full of colour and feels nice and warm. The lane is extremely well placed and leads us in towards the all important figure. The figure works very well although it would have been ideal if it was a tad to the right. For me a slight crop off the sky to tighten the composition would have been the finishing touch to this attractive landscape.

Hanging Tulips

There is a beautiful pastel qualiity to this. The soft colours work well and although it is a high key exposure there is great detail in the petals. The image is completed of course by the petals that have fallen. Depth of field does tail off towards the back but this is a very nice image.

This is great use of monochrome coupled with a great composition. The path between the highly detailed leads us down through the image. The stile could be a block but as it is in the open position it allows us to mentally pass through and onto the oast houses. The contrast of the snow and skeletal bushes works well. Personally I would crop off part of the sky to concentrate our gaze on the oasts. I think a colour version could be just as successful as it would be interesting to see how the brick colour of the oast houses would work against the snow.

Taking Off

SM

I'm not sure if this a straight image or a composite but ultimately it is the final picture I am judging. The capture of the birds in mid flight is extremely well timed as they mostly appear separated and the exposure gives us great detail to enjoy. There arrangement is great as well as they are mostly heading the same way. These lighter tones are contrasted excellently against the dark green sea defence type structure. An interesting and different image.

Silhouette at Sunset

The tones in the sky here are fantastic and the crisp, stark  silhouette of the trees contrasts beautifully. For me the image is the left hand two thirds and this is where I would crop it. The trunk and bottom half of the tree on the right is lost in the silhouette and although it provides a  nice balance I think I would indeed crop it. Spot on exposure nonetheless.

Grumpy Robin

3rd

I always enjoy snapping robins and they always appear to be great characters and surprisingly tame. This one does indeed have a grumpy look to him! Technically, the focussing and exposure are spot on. Focussing on the bird with a wider aperture to separate him from his surroundings makes for a great image.

Teddy and Bunny eat out

This is a quality still life. The detail presented is great and the sharpness and lighting is well done. If these figures were perhaps from the same manufacturer this could be the sort of image to advertise them as opposed to brash merchandise imaging.

Turnstone

SM

Although this is a still photograph it conveys movement by its very composition. Positioning the bird to the left with great space to move into and using a letterbox crop all conveys movement. The high ISO has given some harsher tones  but this is a nice capture.

Snow Moon

This picture of the full snow Moon is nicely placed within the square picture space. The Moon itself is a little overexposed and I would certainly return to the original file and try to reveal more detail. There is certainly detail there as I can see the large crater Tycho.

Freshly fallen snow in the woods

The snow on the side of the trees works very well and there are some great shapes there. The composition works well although I think it needs a 'zing' point to catch the eye. Exposure in snow scenes can be tricky as there is a fineline between a muddy, bright and overexposed images but this is nicely balanced.

Lone tree in the winter snow

1st

A simple but very effective image. I like the off centre composition and the soft contrast has revealed tones all the way through including some sky detail. The dark tone beneath the tree is very important to this image. The quality is high as well especially considering this is a phone image.

Snow & Ice.

There are some nice monochrome tones here and I like how they are harsher where the hard ice is compared to the snow. The large out of focus area is distracting but I enjoy the icy areas.

Snow Dog

The face with its surrounding hair type fur is brilliant and I would have cropped the image here. Including the snow fits the title but these areas are overexposed and take our eyes away from that fantastic face. The nose is sharper than the eyes and if possible I would shift the focus point to a hyperfocal point to ensure even sharpness. This dog is a great subject and I thik there are some great images to be taken of him/her.
