Sunset at Motney Hill

1st

It is the lighting and wonderful colours that make this image. If it was taken on a dull day you would not look twice. The timing and composition are first rate. Burnt out white areas where the sun is can be distracting but here it is a small part of the image and works well. Excellent.

Herne Bay Pier

2nd

There is real drama here and I love the composition which conveys some nice depth. The shutter speed has added some nice movement in the water and everything is topped off with the flash of light on the pier buildings. Nice.

Draco Volant

Well done on getting close to this specimen. The focussing on the main body has produced some wonderful detail there. Depth of field can be a problem with smaller subjects and here the far wings are out of focus and the surface the creature is on does clash a little. However, it is still a great shot of this insect. Well done.

Robin

It is great to see a robin in an environment like this and not on the ubiquitous garden fork handle, good as those images often are. Here the foliage is a little bright and there is a tad yellow colour cast but the shallow depth of field and accurate focussing concentrates our gaze directly on the birds eye. Very good.

Searching that perfect shot

Sunsets are often a happy hunting ground time for great shots with its attendant colours and lighting effects. Having the figure on the left and looking out of the image breaks rules maybe but is ok for me. The bright burnt out area of the sun is a bit too distracting for me though and the image colours are a little muted indicating possible underexposure. However, I like the story which has added greatly to the image.

Double take

Pretty much a near perfect reflection and well done in retaining the detail in the highlights. Reflections are often a lower exposure but good to retain those whites on the top surface image. The muted lighting has helped of course. Composition is also well arranged with a sense of movement created by giving the bird space to move into.

napier railton at brooklands

I am a little jealous that you were able to see this beast of a machine in action as it was in the workshop when I was there. The panning has given a real sense of speed although a slightly longer shutter speed would have blurred out the background more. The very wide angle lens used has created a strange perspective and distorted the car but this adds in a way to the power and majesty of it.

Old boy watching the world

SM

This is an image with a story and one wonders what this old has seen during his years. The focussing and depth of field, and the use of a longer lens has created a nice image isolating the animal from his surroundings. The detail and the colour of the fur are very good indeed.

Beach shoes at Herne Bay

I like the idea here and the execution is good although I think I would have gone in a little closer and cropped out all of the black areas and just had the shoes filling the frame. Well done on noticing the red shoes as these create a perfect 'zing' point to catch our eyes.

Canoes being stored at Fordwich

The leading line created by these boats prows up through the centre of this is well seen and well arranged in the composition. However, the line leads to the back of the boats and then ends. If possible for me another element is required for our eyes to rest on at this point I think. As taken the image composition is also much strengthened if the background foliage is cropped out completely and just the boats are left to fill the frame. This really then accentuates the patterns and lines within this image.

Sunset over Thames Estuary

There are some lovely tones in the sky here. The composition is simple and well done on avoiding having the horizon slap bang in the middle. Of course the icing on the cake is that seagull. For perfect positioning I might have waited a split second more to have it further in the frame but as it is it works really well.

Reculver Towers

Reculver towers are a classic photography location and why not as they are a great subject. This image differs from most in that the photographer has chosen to have them as a silhouette and included the Roman fort ruins as well which really frame the image nicely. I'm in two minds if I would have included the top of these ruins or cropped as the photographer has but even so there is a strong graphic feel to this.

Old Fishing Boat

This is a very quiet study of this vessel. The composition is nicely balanced with great detail throughout. What makes this image is the sky with it's excellent tones and cloud patterns. Some nice understated quality.

3rd

There is a timeless quality to this. The sepia style tones add to this as does the overal quality because although it is sharp and full of detail there appears to be an old fashioned feel to the lens. The eyes are very dark although there are tones in there and I wonder if they could have been lifted slightly but this is carping on what is a great image.

Beyond the doors

I like to take 3D images and this would be a good subject for me as layered planes work well. In addition to allowing us a glimpse through the doors I like the arrangement of the background. Technically everything is good with good balanced exposure and nice depth of field.

Stowe house the marble saloon

This is a nice capture of this fantastic building. I like the wealth of detail and the careful exposure which has retained the highlight details. The convergence from lifting the front of the lens does not detract for me as it gives a sense of size to the room. However, the bottom is a tad tightly cropped. Well done though with getting a good colour balance with all those differing light sources.

Minster

SM

A very good exercise in light and shade with the added bonus of a long exposure technique. It is interesting how this smooths out all the movement. I like the high quality monochrome and the careful shading on the top left contrasting against the harshness of the groyne. I'm wondering if the dead space could have had something else in there although this would have been difficult with the long exposure. Very good.

Hoverfly

A very colourful and well caught study of this insect. Images that are taken 'on location' are always nice to see and this is a good example. To strengthen the composition I think I would have cropped the right hand side to move the fly closer to that edge. Even so this is a nice image.

WWII Destroyer Memorial Chatham Historic Dockyard

I have seen this memorial and in fact have photographed it myself and there are many scenes such as this that can be taken from it. This has been carefully selected and framed very well. The verdegris colour works well and the detail is great. This is a very good record type shot of the monument and  although there is no indication to the size of this piece it is still a great shot.

Swan Lake

SM

The lighting and the water detail works extremely well here. We also have the magic number three subjects and its great we have contrasting colours in the foreground and background birds. The highlights at the top and top right are a distraction but there is no doubt this was taken at the right time. Very good.
