Scotney Castle is quite rightly a magnet for photographers and it is refreshing to see a different viewpoint from the classic view often seen. This image was taken in overcast conditions which are often not ideal but it does allow for a wealth of detail and no burnt out highlights or blocked shadows. As someone interested in history I like how this image shows the different phases of the history of the building. In essence this is a record picture but the nice reflection does lift it into the pictorial realm also. |

Candid or street photography often presents images with stories to ponder such as the couple here. The man in the spotlight is a clever addition as being a highlight he grabs our attention although he is slightly obscurred. Text in images can be notorious for taking our attention away from any subject so having him as a highlight is good. I think I would have reduced or cloned out the other highlight to further accentuate him though. Nicely seen. |

The figure here has been caught with impeccable timing as he is mid stride. The lighting on the face and the front of his body is great. I am a little concerned about his position in the frame being too far to the right hand side though and the fussy background which is a little too intrusive. Obviously, the Cutty Sark is a great subject but I am wondering if a different viewpoint of a wider aperture to throw it out of focus could be beneficial. Some shadow detail is lost but I like the monochrome tones in the lit areas which are nicely controlled. |

This is a nicely captured shot of this little chap. It abounds with detail in the feathers and the all important point of focus on the eye is spot on. It is also great to see it 'in situ' and not on the classic garden fork handle! The white tree branch is out of focus but being bright it does distract a tad. I think I might have cropped the right hand side to remove most of this with the added benefit of making the bird larger in the frame. |

I am very impressed with the monochrome treatment to the bottle here which is of very high quality. It accentuates the glass perfectly and contrasts well with the label. The depth of field is very shallow but the point of focus is on the label which is great. The background is completely out of focus which could be a good move here as it looks like it could be very distracting. A very good monochrome conversion. |

A very nice, quiet image to enjoy. The reflection is good although I would have cropped out some of the bottom portion of the image. For me it could be improved with maybe a couple on the bridge to act as a zing point. Certainly a location to remember and to return to with a couple of friends maybe. |

There is very little I can say about this topical image apart from I imagine it required some careful setting up or perhaps the photographer spotted it which is just as impressive. Exposure for candlelight can be difficult but this looks to be just about correct. I like how the colours of the lights are reflected in the candle itself. |

Once again this is an image with excellent timing. Not only is there at first glance three sails but the ones in the distance are a group of three in front of the brightest area which accentuates them nicely. The diagonal arrangement is quite dynamic as well. I think the image could also work by cropping out the sky which I know would make the top of the image tight to the closest mast. For me it would work cropped just as well as presented. Very nice. |

I can see the idea here which is sound but the snowman is lost amongst the busy background. The excellent sunset deserved capturing but I think a different, closer view including the snowman would be more successful. It is certainly interesting seeing a snowman and palm trees together! |
