Three horses of the fun fair

This is a real riot of colour. I like the composition and the lead in. I'm a little concerned that the depth of field does not reach the far horse but I do like the effect here.

Ship on the sea

3rd

This is a combination of high key with minimalism and good use of dead space. It is quite effective although is it too high key? I'm wondering if there should be just a tad more wave detail. The seagull of course makes it.

Low Key Glass Vase

This is something different. We often see clear glass subjects with black edges created with pieces of black card just out of shot but this is the negative oppositie. It works fairly well but we are losing the top edges into the background. An interesting idea.

Flower Head

I am no botanist but I do know that many judges will require a slihtly more descriptive title. Having said that this is a well controlled imaged in that the limited depth of field is concentrated in the correct area for me.  It may have been beneficial to stop down just slightly more to get more of the head in focus though. I enjoy the background where the sea of similar flowers creates a nice diffused effect.

Yellow Door

This is a well seen image. I like the lighting and how this has emphasized the elements within the image. It has been taken at a slight angle and I may have taken it more square on to reduce the slanted area at the base of the image. Good exposure though with great detail.

Horse Sculpture at Dusk

2nd

What a great location and the lighting conditions here are great. The horse sculpture is an interesting object and works quite well apart from the intrusion of the dark background beyond it. I woder if a lower camera position, if possible, could have reduced this whilst still retaining the excellent reflection. Very atmospheric.

Red Admiral

This is a very different view of this butterfly than the classic top view we often see. The composition is nice and dynamic but unfortunately no part of the insect is sharp. I'm not sure if this is focussing or movement. I would have pushed up my ISO to gain more aperture stops and/or shutter speed. Well done for a different approach.

Beach huts at Minster

It is interesting to see what is in effect a backlit image of these with the sun casting shadows in front of the huts. The shadows and composition do work well to create a nice recession into the image. There is good sky detail where I may have darkened down the blue for dramatic effect. Very good depth of field.

Chinese leopard

Wow, what an image, full of drama and power and such quality as well. The exposure, colouring, focussing, detail and timing are all spot on. The eyes are strangely disturbing but there is no mistaking that mouth. Excellent.

Roar

SM

Another excellent big cat image. Again the detail captured is exceptional. The use of monochrome has accentuated the detail but for me it requires some finishing touches. The face is marvelous but I may have darkened the mane area to add some contrast and define it more. There are also some corner details that I would have darkened down more to concetrate our gaze on those teeth and that eye. Very striking indeed.

Wisley Gardens

I am assuming this panoramic image is a compositie of many exposures stitched together in which case it has been executed very well. There are no joins that I can see. The composition is well thought out to include the whole of the lake but it does feel a little off balance. I think another element in the right side of the iomage could address that imbalance for me. Lighting was a little dull but it has helped to capture a full range of tones.

Through the Waterfall

Using natural frames can be a good idea and this is a good example. This is a nice idea but it is unfortunate that the most interesting part of the composition is in the lower half of the image with the brighter area above taking our gaze away.Nevertheless it is a nice idea and I believe a different picture than most others taken at this location.

Self portrait with camera at Tate Modern

A well seen image with the projected 'photographer' perfectly placed. The effects from the artwork work well but although out of your control it is a shame about the intrusion dark head in the foreground. I would be tempted to crop this and concentrate on the image to the left. Well done for something different.

Sunset beach huts at Tankerton

Nice to see an image taken away from the usual 5ft 10" (178cm!) , above the ground shots. The ultra low angle works well. Beach huts are a common subject but here we have great lighting with wonderful tones in the sky to lift this image. I wonder whether another element such as a figure on the path may be an added advantage. Excellently timed shot.

Night shot of Kigali petrol station, Rwanda

SM

Night photography can be a real test of technique and equipment so this image taken with a mobile phone is impresssive. There is a wealth of detail and again I like the low angle. The garage is a little tight in the frame and the sky is jet black. (Night images often benefit from being taken at twilight to give a dark hue to the sky). The photographer should be congratulated on taking a different subject as well.

Sunset at Cobham Churchyard

There is some interesting lighting here with the front of the subject well lit although the sun is behind. Using the branches has diffused the huge bright spot there would have been and the starburst ray effect is good. Be careful with the title as I would say the sun is a little high in the sky to call this a sunset. Some nice warm colours and good arrangement.

Allhallows Marsh

SM

The use of the foreground detail here has worked well as the Marsh with its flat landscape can create difficulties. I am interested in the softness of the background considering the small aperture used but I do like the effect.
