Yaght on the Meway

2nd

The absolute glory of this is that wonderful colour especially its affect on those great waves. Similar images with a distant shoreline often duffer from the effect of being cut in half by the dark line but here the photographer has managed to retain detail which is excellent. The sun has created a bright spot at the edge which is difficult to crop out and that is a shame but overal I really enjoy this.

The Golden Hour on the River Medway

3rd

Once again the sunset colours have created an attractive image. The composition clearly shows we are on the Medway which is good. We have good detail from the foreground to the background. The sky is a little light and contrasty and I wonder if there was more detail in the RAW file to play with. Another nice image.

Black Rimmed Glasses

A very different, minimialist image with a very small range of tones which are carefully controlled. The cup in the background is very important and has been arranged perfectly. I was unsure of the black corner top right and unfortunately I prefer this with it removed but having said that I congratulate the photographer on producing something original and nicely done.

Into the Night

I like the lead in created by this composition which draws us into the image. The depth of field is nicely controlled. Although this is a night shot it does look a little muddy and underexposed and I wonder if the brightness could be adjusted. It doesn't need much but i think it will improve an already good picture.

Fountains at Kew

1st

A very striking and nicely composed night shot. The colour is brilliant and the obviously long exposure has worked really well. There are some burnt out spots but those are unavoidable when there is a contrast range like this to contend with. The crop is a little tight but I really enjoyed this very much and that statue silhouette is spot on.

Queendown Warren

1st

This image demonstrates two very valuable landscape photography tools that will greatly enhance images of this type. The first is look for shapes in the composition and here the photographer has utilised the 'S' curve which gracefully glides us through from front to back. The second is the brilliant lighting here. Imagine this taken on a dull day? As presented the composition here does lack a zing point but other than that it is a masterclass.

Coot

A nicely timed action image showing the bird well and in its environment. Unfortunately the nice lighting did not hit the birds head and the relatively high ISO has created some noise in the dark head area although well done on retaining the eye which could easily have been lost..

Cygnet

There is a wealth of detail to enjoy here with excellent sharpness. The lighting has worked well to highlight the detail in the feathers. The crop is a little tight at the bottom and I may have lightened the head area slightly to balance the image but I must congratulate the photographer on retaining detail in the shadows and the highlights which are often lost in swan images.

Yohoi

SM

This is an interesting portrait. The pose fills the frame nicely and the shadows appear to be produced by the lighting so this looks like a well planned exercise. There is a bit of noise which indicates a higher ISO but the contrast is nicely controlled and there is a real sheen to the dress surface. Very good.

Teston Oast House

SM

This is another landscape image which demonstrates the importance of good lighting. The composition is a series of receding layers of light and dark which draws us in nicely. It is unfortunate that the subject matter, the oast house is actually in shadow but otherwise this has been well seen, well composed and nicely presented.

Rochester Castle and Cathedral Framed

The historical mediaeval centre of Rochester has been very nicely captured here with great lighting and image control and would have been a very nice image in itself. However, the photographer has been very bold and chosen to add this chrome tubing to act as a frame. There is no doubt that it elevates the view into something very unique.

Sunset from Bluebell Hill, Chatham

There is no doubt that the line of orange and the sun does add something to an otherwise fairly straightforward  shot of this great view of Kent. The image itself does look a bit underexposed but well done with realising the potential of that very different sunset.

Walking the Dogs

3rd

It is the attention  to detail which shows through here. The composition is text book with the figure given more  space in front of them than behind to walk into. The timing is spot on as well with the walkers' foot raised and the front dog in an excellent position. In an ideal world the other dog would have been fully in view as well. Finally the colour palette of blues and oranges combine together to complete this nicely taken image.

Hip Flask

2nd

This still life/record image is very high quality and again shows the attention to detail given to it by the photographer. The shadowless lighting and background have been well chosen and having a reflective surface as a base works very well indeed. The monochrome looking tones  nicely contrast against the brown tones of the whisky. Very good.
